GandhiThe Power of Pacifism

1 Mr. Gandhi, tell us your general background, and background of where you were born. Ans. On October 2, 1869, I was born in a northwestern state of India, in a well-to-do family. I was a curious kid and always liked to experiment with every thing. My dad was a businessman and my mom a housewife. At that time, India was under the British Rule, as it was since around 1645. Britishers controlled not only India but also Pakistan, which was, back then, a part of India. There were many protests against the Britishers, mostly violent, but none succeded. 2 Can you tell us what happened throught your life in terms of impotant events? Ans. In 1885, my father died, then in 1887, I went to London to study law and become a lawyer. In 1891, I came back to India as a fully qualified lawyer and a gentleman. In 1893, I went to Johannesburg to practice law and came back in 1914 after 21 years of practicing law. In 1930, I launched my first major civil disobidience campaign against the British , and my “Fast unto death” for social reform in 1932. Eventually, in 1947, India was liberated and I became the “Father of the Nation”. At last, in 1948, I was assassinated. 3 What were some of the most important events that changed your life? Ans. Events that changed my life were my father’s death and going to London. I was an irresponsible teenager when my father died, that’s when I felt the full weight of audulthood and responsibility. Then, when I went to London to study law, I realized the true meaning of being an Indian and the true feeling of my country. I saw how the Britishers had been sucking out all the wealth and prosperity out of India.
