"To An Athlete Dying Young" by A. E. Housman
The theme of "To An Athlete Dying Young," can be received from the last stanza of the poem. The poem ends with the townspeople gathered at an athlete's funeral. A.E. Housman presents this poem with the use of dramatic monologue, as though a clergyman is delivering an elegy. There is a pattern to the poem which is noticeable in the speaker's voice by conveying images and the style of the poem, which restates the idea that it, was good for the athlete to dye young. The apparent mood and imagery are darkened by the sensation of gloom resulting from the speaker's awareness of the athlete's death.
