"Race" is a very peculiar concept. It is one of those things that everybody thinks they understand, but gets less clear the harder we look at it. Race is a cultural category into which people are placed based upon apparent biological characteristics. In this essay, I will review some of the causes of racism and suggest some of solutions to the national wound.
Why is there even such a term as racism in society? Many of the causes of racism link back to the late 1800s when blacks fought against discrimination whenever possible. The United States Supreme Court supported segregation. One of the cases against segregated rail travel was Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), in which the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that "separate but equal" accommodations were constitutional [text 391].
