El Salvador
The country of El Salvador is located in Central America. It borders Honduras, Guatemala, and the Pacific Ocean. El Salvador was once part of Spain, but achieved it's independence in 1821. After that they became part of the Central American Federation until 1839 when they succeeded from it. More recently, there was a devastating civil war which lasted twelve years and claimed 75,000 lives. The war ended in 1992 when the government and rebels signed a peace treaty promising reform.
El Salvador is 20,720 square kilometers, comparable to the size of Massachusetts. It is the smallest country in Central America, and the only one without a coastline on the Caribbean Sea. The country has a tropical climate with a rainy season from May to October, and a dry season from November to April.
