Saddam Hussein
Saddam Hussein has become one of the world's most famous political leaders as well as one of the most unpopular. Since Saddam Hussein became president of Iraq in 1979 his powerful and cruel regime has tried to dictate ever part of his people's lives. His family, form of government, and repression of his people have all played major roles in his quest for absolute power.
Details of Saddam Hussein's early life are not well known. However, it is known that Saddam Hussein's father left shortly after his birth and his mother was not able to care for him so he was sent to live with his uncle Khairallah Tulfah. This uncle supposedly inspired Saddam Hussein's quest for power at an early age. Through his uncle Sadda, Hussein met his first wife, his cousin Sajid Talfah, whom he later divorced. Since then, he has had two other wives, Samira Shahbandar, whom he forced into marriage after causing her husband to divorce her, and his third wife, Nidal al-Hamdani, who was also forced to divorce her husband and marry Saddam Hussein (McGreary 29).
