The decade of the 1920s, no matter what adjective it follows, was a period of major social changes that altered the course of American History. People, such as, women, immigrants, African Americans, mobsters, prohibitionists, Protestants, and writers demonstrated the reason of why the twenties were described as "roaring" decade. During this decade women gained the right to vote, the consumption and possesion of alcohol became illegal, black culture flourished, novels about the corrupted American dream were written, and America witnessed a "Second Wave" of immigrants. Events, such as these, played important roles in changing the lifestyle of society in America.
For women especially, the 1920s were a time of new growth and independence. The long-awaited 19th Amendment was passed on August 18th, 1920, finally given women and other minorities the right to vote. In correlation, corsets came off and waistlines went down. For the first time, women could show their legs, and they used this to their advantage as hemlines became shorter and shorter.
In 1919, the 18th Amendment passed the act of Prohibition, which made consumption and even possession of alcohol illegal. The general intent of this Amendment was to lower crime and improve the general status of life...
