1) Summarization of Passage.
De Cordova speculated that a star was created by the publics appreciations of
there work. In the case of Cinema, a celebrity would need to be seen in numerous films
and adopt different roles, so that the star would then increase his audience; for they
would all appreciate a different role he/she can play.
To become a celebrity, there would already need to be an audience in the desired
medium so that someone could see them perform. The continuous appearance of the star
would leave the fan wanting two things, a similar role to what we had seen them do
before, and something new to the character, so we can see even more of what the star is
capable off. He also speculated that the star does not need to be constantly seen
throughout the film, that there absences can even help them become more famous, as the
audience will desire to see them when they are not on screen, so that when they do show,
there appreciation of them grows more. He also speculates that the modern star is less of
an attraction as the stars of year ago. This argument can be supported by the idea that
with modern media, it is easier to reach a larger audience. However he later believes that
it is the desire to search into a stars background and into there private lives, that helps us
identify with a celebrity, and once we find that they have similar tastes to ourselves, we
like the star even more.
