I: Introduction
Wouldn't it be nice to always know what is going on within your own body? Wouldn't you love to know that you are healthy and in complete control of yourself and your own well-being? For most people this is not even an issue. Most people wake up everyday knowing control is in their hands, and if for some reason they felt "off" they could always find the proper help they needed and everything would be fine again. Unfortunately, for about 2 million Americans each year across the country, this couldn't be farther from the truth. About 2 million Americans are diagnosed each year with an intensely disturbing disease called bipolar disorder (Newman, p. 120). With an exceptionally high reoccurrence rate, this disease seems to never go away. "There is an 80%-90% probability of reoccurrences within a few years (Tohen, Watermaux, & Tsvang, 1990; Winokur, Clayton, & Reich, 1969)."
