Sophocles suggests that society prevents women from exerting their own free will. Free will is one's own perception of the right to life, liberty, and happiness. With the prevention of one's free will, one is unable to uphold her own family's honor. Without free will, one no longer has the privilege to discover what her role is in life. One can no longer have control over her own personal self without the right to exercise her own free will.
