Already in the beginning of the novel "Animal Dreams", by Barbara Kingsolver, we clearly see Codi's connection to Hallie, as being her guiding star. Codi clings onto Hallie's sisterly love through the letters that they send between them, and also acquires some hapiness by being able to respond to Hallie's letters. Hence, as a result of Hallie's sudden death, Codi becomes fuller of life, and searching for a new life wherever she goes becomes a thing of the past. Codi was always trying to correct her life, using Hallie as a model, and finally, when Hallie dies, Codi finds the meaning of her own life and lives it.

I could imagine Doc Homer dreaming up these names, confident we'd both take noble courses. Suddenly I felt dragged down by emotions as I walked along, as if I'd swum out into a calm sea and encountered a bad undertow. I carried my suitcase towards the edge of the town."
In this passage, Codi envies Hallie for her social skills...
