One of the greatest periods in the history of the arts occurred during the Revolutionary Period. The Revolutionary Period lasted from early to late nineteenth century. During this time, there came many advances in industry, society, technology, science, as well as art. Two main art styles were introduced during this period: the neoclassical style and the romantic style. The neoclassical style occurred during the early part of the nineteenth century, sometimes called the Enlightenment, or The Age of Reason; the romantic style occurred during the French Revolution, or the later nineteenth century, around 1850.
The neoclassical style dealt with symmetry, balance, proportion and harmony, while the romantic style held to the love of nature, unrestrained imagination, sympathetic interest in the past, idealization of rural life, and interest in human rights. The neoclassical style dealt with reason, while the romantic style dealt with an individual's feelings and placed him or her at the center of art. The slogan of the neoclassical period was, "I think; therefore, I am" (Fleming, 511). On the other hand, the slogan of the romantic period was, "I feel; therefore, I am" (511). In contrast to the neoclassical style, the romantic artists exalted, "emotion over intellect, mystery over reason, passion over restraint, freedom over rules, and supremacy of the individual over that of the crowd" (511)...
