“A THOUSAND CLOWNS” “A Thousand Clowns” was written by Herb Gardner. Mr. Gardner was born on December 28, 1934 and died very recently (September 23, 2003). He was a writer, producer, and director. A couple of plays he wrote include “The Goodbye People”, “Thieves”, and “I’m not Rappaport”. Herb Gardner was born in New York City. He graduated from the High School of Performing Arts in 1952. He also attended Carnegie Institute of Technology and Antioch College. Even though he did not have a huge amount of plays that he wrote, he won some awards and was very respected by other people in the theater. I read the play and I watched the movie. I’m glad I did both because the movie gave me mental pictures that I did not have with the book. The time period seems to be either the late 1950s or early 1960s. I came to this conclusion because of the way the people were dressed and how they talked in the movie. Most of the action happens in Murray’s apartment. It seemed to be a messy and cluttered place. The layout of the apartment was very interesting. The living room was in the center of apartment and it seemed like everything was very open to the living room. I think that the apartment is messy because Murray is home a lot and does not really notice how messy his apartment is. The apartment is in a large apartment building in the heart of New York City. When you watch the movie and the scenes take place outside the apartment you see all the cars whizzing by and the people going about their business. The music in the movie was kind of loud and I think that it helped to make the scene appear very busy. The main character is Murray Burns. In my opinion, Murray seems like he is controlled in some of his actions because he wants to impress Nick.
