Arranging a Marriage in india is an article written by Serena Nanda, coiled from the book "The Naked Anthropologist." The article as the name implies, is based on the arrangement and importance of marriage in India, not just between the bride and groom, but between both families. Certain factors are taken into consideration in choosing a bride such as the caste system, the level of education, physical attractiveness, and compatibility with the future in-laws. At this point, one may begin to wonder if this arrangement of marriage is really not better espcially when one looks at the rate of divorce especially in the United States. There seem to be a clear understanding of Nanda's central claim as quoted, "In a society where divorce is still a scandal and wher, in fact, the divorce rate is exceedingly low, an arranged marriage is the beginning of a life time relationship not just between the bride and groom but between their families as well." This is especially true when looking at the statistics of the divorce rate in the U.S. that more than one of every two marriages end in a divorce and also considering the definntion of a marriage as a life time union between 2 people. Nanda's further entry into the Indian culture provides the basis of her perspective and sheds a new light to her view on an arranged marriage. In a culture where every important resource in life is gained through family connections shows the importance of the family in choosing a bride and it would be absolutely foolish to cut one's selfoff this pleasures just to be with a particular person...
