Dead Sea Magnesium (DSM Ltd.) Leadership in magnesium research
Since the establishment of 'Dead Sea Magnesium' in 1996 it was clear to its founders that the success of the company and its competitiveness depended on its ability to develop a strong R&D structure that would ensure the emergence of strong innovative capabilities. Emphasis was therefore placed on R&D from the very beginning, with the infrastructure for research being laid out parallel to the establishment of the company. Over $2 million (US) were invested in the research facilities of DSM, which span over 1,200 square meters and employ some 30 researchers working full time.
When examined with hindsight, the decision to prioritize R&D has proved appropriate in light of decreasing raw magnesium prices and increasing market competitiveness. It is now clear that one of the major methods by which added market value of magnesium can be increased is the development of new magnesium alloys for specific applications. The number of existing magnesium alloys compared with the number of aluminum alloys provides some insight to possibilities for such future developments. The automotive industry has been the target of DSM's researchers for these developments with the intention to introduce new magnesium alloys that will provide new innovative solutions that were not feasible using the existing ones. In addition, providing Die-Casters with sophisticated support relating to their whole production processes is emphasized.
