Introduction
Within this text I will examine the need to use of logic in critical thinking. I will identify my methods for differentiating logic and perceptions. I will also identify some perceptual blocks that may hinder my ability to think logically.
Development
"In order to achieve a higher level of thinking or critical thinking, the individual must have the ability to process through the three parts: analysis, synthesis, and evaluation" (Jessen lecture 12/17/03). As we analyze what we have reflected on, we use this process to separate those things that are based on logic from those that are our own perceptions based on our biases and emotions. In order to adequately do this we must first recognize our biases and understand our perceptions.
One definition of perception from Merriam Webster that struck me is "physical sensation interpreted in the light of experience." This definition highlights that perception is an individualized way of looking at a situation or problem based our own experiences and not on a universal understanding or interpretation. In order to adequately assess a situation or conclusion, we must be able to filter out our personal feelings and perceptions. This is clearly difficult unless we do a thorough self assessment and continual re-assessment as our perceptions do change...
