Adam Smith was an Enlightenment thinker that had a huge impact on the economy in Europe. His book, Inquiry into the Nature and Cause of the Wealth of Nations (1776), explained a basis for what the economy and government should do in symbiosis. The government should only have control of the economy in certain projects such as large public projects of canals and roads. They should also be in control of the law meaning the police and all of the courts, and they should be in control of the military of that country. Adam Smith believed that the country should not at all be in charge of restricting and moderating small and large businesses. This idea was a basis for a strong and good economy that relied on the ambition of the people. Because everyone had ambition to make money, everyone wanted to make and have money, thus Smith's ideas were accepted and used.
When the question asks, "Can greed be good?" there are several answers to that question. In Smith's eyes, he probably sees greed as being good...
