Yellow Raft in Blue Water

Independent Woman In the novel A Yellow Raft in Blue Water, by Michael Dorris, Christine, Rayona’s mother has had a hard life. Her brother died in Vietnam, she has abandonment issues with her husband, and has a negative relationship with her mother. As a child her mother favored her brother and as Christine grew up she continued to grow away from her mother. This forced Christine to become an independent woman. Christine grew up taking care of herself, and then Rayona, not relying on anyone else. Christine lives with this guiding principle until she finds out that she is going to die.
