Reconstruction after the Civil War
Reconstruction was the period after the Civil War took place. It was also called Radical Reconstruction. It took place from 1865-1877. It was the time when the South was in deep political, economical, and social turmoil. Also eleven Confederate states had seceded. Since Confederate states were important to the Union, they tried to regain control of them. To do so, it set up a Freedom Bureau.
The Freedom Bureau provided resettlement aid, food, medical-care, but most importantly it set up schools and teacher-training institutions for teachers. It set up over one thousand schools, some of which were black colleges. But due to inadequate funds, they were not able to stop some of the poverty that threatened the society...
