In the book, jealousy is like the tension between two friends who like the same person; they know it is there, but they choose not to acknowledge it. It is a feeling we have all gone through, and we have all wanted to act upon it, but we have not. Jealousy is seen throughout out the John Knowles’ novel Separate Peace. Jealousy is what drove Gene and Finny apart because their friendship was not strong enough to overcome it. Jealousy is a main theme in this novel seen in the very beginning. Phineas was the natural athlete, and Gene was the brain. It seems like they have nothing in common; perhaps the only thing they have in common is that they are both jealous of each other.
