The Ragmans Daughter
Task: Compare the characters of Doris and Tony and show how they fit into the theme of the story.
For this task, I have chosen the short story 'The Ragmans Daughter' written by Alan Sillitoe. The story is about a wealthy girl named Doris, and a thief named Tony (whom was in love with Doris) who both robbed together. Doris only does this for the thrill of doing something rebellious. One evening, while robbing a shop, Doris turned on the light to try on a pair of shoes she liked, not thinking about Tony who was dipping his fingers into the cash register. A policeman noticed lights on and went to investigate. Tony saw the policeman and attracted the policeman away from Doris by running away, losing a shoe to the copper while he climbed over a gate.
Tony then does time in prison after he is caught the next day because of losing his shoe. In prison, he has no regrets about being there, but he is in torture because he gets no letters from Doris. Doris was brought up without a mother, and spoilt by her father...
