In March 1977, Dr. Ralph B. Peck delivered the commencement address to the West Point Chapter of the Society of American Military Engineers with respect to the graduates waiting to be commissioned in the Corps of Engineers. His message emphasized two characteristics that engineers must acquire in order to develop successful careers, in correlation with the training and background provided by the educational institution: engineering judgment and professional and public responsibility. Although this speech was presented to military engineers, I found that it applies to all engineers in general.
Peck defined engineering judgment simply as a "good sense of proportion," and he discusses how this trait can be developed. The first point is to learn something new from each and every assignment, regardless of its degree of technicality. One can always observe ways in which others handle problems.
