The unveiling of new safety signs at Footscray Primary School on Friday 15 August will mark the launch of Maribyrnong Council's Safety around Schools program.
"Safety around Schools aims to reduce the risk of pedestrian causalities to children on the way to and from school," said Mayor of Maribyrnong, Cr Gerard White.
"The program aims to make roads safer for children by implementing a range of traffic and parking regulations around schools."
Research has shown that speeding, reversing long distances and double parking are all common occurrences outside schools.
"This type of behaviour is illegal and puts our children at risk. We must do everything we can to ensure the safety of children going to and from school," said Cr White.
As part of the City of Maribyrnong's Road Safety Strategy, Council spent six months reviewing safety issues around five different schools in the municipality.
"Council worked in close partnership with local school communities and residents to determine what changes should be implemented," said Cr White.
"The comprehensive feedback we received from the community means we can now implement a variety of measures that balance the needs of motorists passing by, parents picking up their children, and pedestrians."
