Florida FCAT Exam
There is a great deal of controversy among English language learners and mainstream students when you talk about the FCAT exam. The Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is part of Governor Jeb Bush's education reforms designed to improve teaching and learning through higher standards and accountability. The test provides an objective measurement of basic skills, and it allows parents and teachers to monitor each student's annual learning gains. The Norm Referenced Test compares Florida's students to their peers across the country. Scores are based on scale of 424 as the worst case and 863 as the best. The National percentile ranks show where a typical local school falls on a scale of one to one hundred; the National median is 50. Florida's Comprehensive Assessment Test FCAT, was established by Governor Bush's administration in 1998. The test is given to all public school students in grades third through tenth. The purpose of the test is to measure each student's proficiency in reading and math in addition to measuring writing skills in certain grades: 4, 8 and 10.
