THE DEATH PENALTY Introduction The death penalty is a very controversial subject. In this report I will review statistics about the death penalty and some pro’s and con’s of its uses. Statistics 71 inmates were executed in 2002. This is 5 more than the previous year. 69 of those executed in 2002 were men; 2 were women. 53 of those executed in 2002 were white; 18 were black In 2002 - 3,557prisoners were on death row. In 2001 - of those on death row 1,931 were white, 1,554 were black, 27 were American Indian, 33 were Asian, and 12 were of unknown race. Capital Punishment is legal in 38 states and the Federal Government. The oldest inmate on death row last year was 87 and the youngest was 18.
