Essay - Lord of the Flies
In Lord of the Flies, the author, W. Golding, effectively uses symbols to portray important components of human existence. In this novel, Golding has used Ralph and the conch, Piggy and his glasses, and the beast to display the purest and most corrupt aspects of human nature. Ralph and the conch are used to symbolize authority, order, and civilization. They are a demonstration of a good use of power throughout the novel. Piggy and his glasses are also another form of pure human nature. They are the representation of intelligence and rationalism, and are extremely important for any hope of being rescued. On the total opposite end of the spectrum, the beast is a symbol of savagery and fear in all human beings. These symbols are used frequently within the novel and truly display aspects of human nature.
