The letter’s purpose is to publicly inflict chastisement; privately it bestows her with a sense of others’ own sinful thoughts and behavior. ... ” Also, in the Custom House Hawthorne claims to have “ experienced a sensation…as if the letter were not of red cloth, but red-hot iron (31).” This is also referred to in Chapter 5 when the townspeople gossip that the scarlet A, actually burns upon Hester’s chest and describes it as “…red-hot with infernal fire (81),” and even glowing in the dark.
