Jerome "Jerry" Garcia was born on August 1, 1942, in San Francisco, California to Jose and Ruth Garcia. His father was a Spanish immigrant who loved music. He owned a bar and was a respected musician and bandleader around San Francisco. The young Jerry had already begun piano lessons when his father died in a fishing accident in 1952. He gave up the piano shortly after this because of his lack of interest and a physical disfigurement. When Jerry was four years old, his older brother accidentally cut off the top half of one of his fingers.
