My research the other face of Medellin, explains how Medellin city of Antioquia, province of Colombia that has been classified, as one of the most violent cities of the world is the home of many artists and scientific advances that had been recognized by the whole world. Medellin art is the testimony of a youth that has voted with its presence and participation, for comprehension and beauty. This essay develops a variety of topics relating to the art of poetry, flower artisans, sculpture, music and the scientific and industrial advances of Medellin. The history of Colombia is one of fratricide. In a moment marked, as it is today, by violence and the deterioration of life, in a scenario of bombs and deflagrations, the International Poetry Festival of Medellin, arose in Medellin as an act of resistance and solidarity, directed toward the protection of the luminous side of life. Consequently, in this way it has originated and strengthened an answer that comes from poetry’s dignity; a transforming action then mobilizes through the building word, and through the poetic language as foundation and legacy that recovers for all the dimension of the spirit. “The joint action of the poets and the people of Medellin has achieved the configuration of a symbolic and real space for the practice of a high dialogue of the spirit, thanks to the creating and revealing powers of poetry.” (Liberating Perspective of Poetry). The annual International Poetry Festival of Medellin draws more poets (107 this year from 69 countries) and larger audiences than any other in the world, and the numbers handsomely vindicate the idea of using art to counteract the affects of chronic violence on a community. (Liberating Perspective of Poetry). A festival day begins with poets visiting schools, prisons and other places where they can reach people who might not otherwise be able to hear poetry. A poet reads first in his or her native language; then a translator takes the stage and reads the work in Spanish. At about four in the afternoon, larger readings begin in plazas and squares all over the city. “Thousands of families listen to poets read as the sun sinks behind the city's surrounding mountains.” (Liberating Perspective of Poetry). Bigger readings, also in city squares, begin around 8:30 in the evening where huge crowds gather to listen for hours into the night. Many bring bottles of wine to drink; as they emptied them sprout candles whose flames dot the crowds with tiny pools of light. The festival takes place at some 80 sites, including movie theaters, museums and coliseums as well as outdoor plazas, and it is broadcast live on Colombian television. Poets also travel for readings to more than 20 other cities.
