The first step our group took while tackling the issue of "free online music downloading" was to side with the majority. The group decided that every one of us has all benefited from this process and many arguments will come very naturally. However, I realized that this assignment could have been improved if each group had done extensive background research before establishing position. This way, both sides of the issue are exposed initially rather than taking on a position because of personal attachment to the issue. As students, most of us are consumers of free online music.
Our first step in organization of presentation was the brainstorming of key points. We all came to consensus regarding the costs of CDs, filler and bogus tracks in many CDs, and convenience of music at your fingertips. There were some insightful points brought up such as the music-sharing network bringing a new dimension to the music industry, where the voice of emerging and small-time artists can be propagated to more potential fans worldwide. We made sure that these points would be elaborated fully during our presentation. There were also technical and legal key points mentioned such as the peer-to-peer file-sharing network being a legitimate source of music files...
