The Places of Interest in Sri Lanka
On the scale of a world map, Sri Lanka previously known as Ceylon appears to hang like a tiny teardrop over the Indian Ocean. From north to south it has a maximum length of 435 kilometers (270 miles), and at its widest point measures 225 kilometers (140 miles), giving the land area of 65,600 square kilometers (25,300 square miles). Sri Lanka's fascinating varieties in climate, landscape, and rich cultural heritage have attracted travelers from all over the world. She welcomes every visitor with a smile and a gracious gesture of greetings. Sri Lanka can be divided in to three typographic areas, which are Hill Country, Middle Country and Beaches.
The Hill Country is the last capital of the Sinhala kings, which is a living record to the magnificent past. Kandy is the main city of the hill country and the cultural center of Sri Lanka. Dominating Kandy is the Dalada Maligawa, the temple of the sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. One of the most specticular sections of this temple is the Patthirippuwa or the Octagon.
