Pygmalion Take Home Essay
The play Pygmalion by Bernard Shaw is a satire on the false values of society. It critiques these false values by mocking or poking fun of them to show the audience how they are flawed values of society. It begins with the introduction of all the characters in the play and moves on to disputes between social classes. Liza Doolittle, the main character, convinces Higgins, a wealthy phonetics teacher, to raise her social behavior to that of a flower girl. Instead of "turning" Liza into a flower girl Higgins successfully changes her attitude, speech, and behaviors into that of royalty. Within the play Pygmalion, Shaw demonstrates the false values in society, such as a "proper" form of language, the rich being superior, and money leading to happiness.
The idea of phonetics is a major theme in this novel. Phonetics is the speech and manors of person. At the beginning of the play this idea is established by the note taker, which is later introduced as Higgins. Higgins is doing a study on phonetics and can tell where a person is from, within blocks, simply by the accent in their speech...
