To Kill a Mockingbird Essay
In her novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses various examples of symbolism. The symbols vary in what is represented, but each expresses and supports a significant idea.
There are many different styles of symbolism used in To Kill a Mockingbird, including racism. An example of racism in the novel is the rabid dog. Scout and Jem were outside "hunting" with their new air rifles when they saw a dog, Tim Johnson, walking down their street. The children question Calpurnia about the dog, asking why he is walking unusual. Cal immediately tells Jem and Scout to hurry inside and stay there. After Cal calls him, Atticus rushes home with the sheriff, Mr. Heck Tate. The sheriff informs Atticus, who claims he has not used a gun in over thirty years, that he must kill Tim Johnson...
