Ecstasy laws should be minimized by legalizing the use of Ecstasy for its theraputical purposes in order to reduce the dangers involved with this substance. Health and Law Enforcement officials warn that these variations of Ecstasy, using research chemicals to produce them, are even hazardous than Ecstasy itself because the effect of the research chemicals have not been studied. ... By increasing the penalties against the manufacturing and distribution of genuine MDMA the government has increased the risk of harm against Ecstasy users. These days many users are taking pills that are represented and sold as true Ecstasy when in fact they are compromised of other dangerous chemicals. ... said before the United States Sentencing Commission on March 20, 2001 on the topic of The Proposed Amendment to Increase Guidelines Sentences Concerning MDMA (Ecstasy) " With regard to MDMA, this commission should consider that a percentage of the harm to young adults and other people who ingest MDMA, does not come from MDMA itself, but rather from the ingestion adulterated, and sometimes entirely misrepresented, MDMA. ... Raising the punishment for those who sell genuine MDMA, as a the commission proposes to do, would create an inverted and anti social incentive structure, one that has the potential to dramatically increase the individual and social harm associated with what may be sold as Ecstasy. By increasing the punishment for manufacturing or selling genuine MDMA, the proposed amendment will encourage unscrupulous manufacturers and dealers to sell other drugs as "Ecstasy" in an effort to avoid the significantly increased punishment for selling genuine MDMA.
