Inside the earth -
The outer crust of the earth consists of solid rock and is extremely thin.
A transition zone lies immediately inside the crust. It consists of hot, molten rock and 0 materials.
The mantle consists of heavy rocks. They are generally solid, but can flow at times because of the great heat.
The core is made up largely of nickel and iron. Temperatures are highest here.
The plates of the earth's crust:
The outer crust of the earth can be compared to the hard shell of a nut that has been cracked in many places. The broken pieces are known as plates.
These huge plates of rock float on heavier, semi-molten rock beneath them and are pushed along by currents of molten rock beneath them...
