I. EUROPEAN UNION history
In 1945 at the end of WWII, Europe was in desperate need of assistance. The devastation brought on by the war left massive areas without such basic services as fresh water, electricity, roads, and communications. The winners as well as the losers of this Great War felt the destruction and the task that lay ahead was not only to rebuild but also to make every possible attempt to insure it would not happen again. There was a willingness to work together in the rebuilding but there were reasons economically that kept the neighboring countries from being true partners. Some of the same economic reasons that caused the war in the first place, were sure to keep countries from reaching out too far past their own borders.
From the beginning of talks to unite between several countries in Europe, there has been unwillingness by some to give up their own independence. Relations between Germany and France gave the biggest hurdles to overcome as the war between them had caused the economic crisis that now endured. A man named Jean Monnet was instrumental in overcoming some of these obstacles. Jean Monnet (1888-1979) was nominated deputy to the secretary-general of the League of Nations after WWI and at the beginning of WWII was sent to London to organize the common administration of the Allies' resources...
