This book is about a little girl named Mary, she lived in India with her parents but they never spent time with her so she had a nanny named Kamala, Mary always gave orders to her, and she had to obey. Her mother was very busy, she was always making parties with all of her friends; her dad was a British official. In India the weather is hot, so Mary was always angry and ill. So one day when she woke up she noticed that Kamala wasn't beside her, but there was another servant, she was very angry and started to say "I hate Kamala, when she comes back I will shout to her" she went outside to play in the garden and she was told that Kamala had died because there was a mortal epidemic disease, everybody started to worry and ran out of there. Mary ran to her room and started crying then she fell asleep, when she woke up there were only a few servants and they said: poor girl now she is alone what is she going to do? She didn't understand what they were saying so she went and asked them what was going on in a bad way, and they told her that her parents had died and she had to go to live to her uncle's house, Mr. Craven.
When she was on the way to Yorkshire, she was going through the darkness of the way and beside her was a woman but she didn't like her, if fact Mary never liked anybody. She arrived to Mr. Craven's house, it was very dark and big, it had a lot of rooms but they were locked...
