Have you ever wondered what society would be like if TVs had never been invented? What would kids do when they got home and were forced to find another form of entertainment? Would the world be a better place?
Many studies have shown that the amount of TV viewed as well as its content can affect children's learning abilities as well as their attitude later in life. That should come as no surprise, considering that the average American spends 3 hours and 46 minutes a day watching TV--that's more than 52 days of continuous TV watching a year! The number of violent scenes the average child sees n TV by age 18 is 200,000 and 16,000 of those scenes deal with murders.
Research shows that men, who as boys, had watched violence on TV most frequently had pushed, grabbed or shoved their spouse at twice the rate of other men. In addition, people who watched more TV shows with heavy violent content were more fearful of the world around them, more likely to commit violent acts, less sensitive to the pain and suffering of others, and less bothered by violence in general.
At the same time, the hidden effects of TV are real risks for emotional, social and cognitive deficits. The average number of minutes a week 2-11 year olds spend watching TV is 1,197, while the average number of minutes those same kids spend on meaningful conversations with their parents is only 39...
