In the epic The Odyssey by Homer, the character Odysseus is made to wander the seas following a course of events during the Trojan War that angered the gods. During his time wandering the sea, Odysseus is often confronted with the opportunity to live in comfort for the remainder of his life. However, Odysseus always refuses to accept the promise of comfort, or eternal life in comfort, instead choosing to endure the harassment of the angry gods, and find his way home. It is the loyalties to his wife that Odysseus possesses, which prompt him to forsake comfort and suffer his way home.
In the epic, Odysseus first arrives at the home of the sea nymph Calypso. As a sea nymph, calypso's beauty would far surpass that of Odysseus wife, Penelope. Also being a sea nymph, Calypso's life would be comfortable and worry free, unlike the life he would live at home. Odysseus stays with her for nine years, but for the duration of the time, he is constantly longing for his home (V ll. 15-6).
