... Similarly is the case with the youthful Pearl from the novel The Scarlet Letter, by Nathaniel Hawthorne. As the daughter of the adulteress Hester Prynne, the Puritan community views Pearl as a demon in an angel’s clothing; as an “imp” who not only knows what the letter "A" means on the chest of her mother, but as the man who put it there as well. They also believe Pearl uses this information against Hester by constantly pointing out and talking about the letter in order to make Hester feel extremely uncomfortable but this is not necessarily true.
