Land injustices in Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe is one of the African countries that mainly have been in the spotlight of medias and the international community’s attention during the last years because of the violent attacks against white farmers. ... The purpose with this dissertation, however, is to investigate how the British colonisation may serve as an explanation to many of the problems Zimbabwe is facing today.
The colonisation of the area today named Zimbabwe, started in 1888. ... The exploitation of the Ndebele- and Shonapeople’s land areas continued till 1893 when the first resistance by the Ndebelepeople took place. ...
The most important factor leading to the unjust and distorted allotment of land was the legislation of the Land Apportionment Act in 1931. Land was defined into two main categories, European “Crown” and African land. ... Another 8% was described as the African Purchase Area, and from here, Africans were allowed to buy land. ... For instance in 1941, the possibility for Africans to obtain land in the white areas was proscribed.
As a final point the Land Apportionment Act shaped a substantial enmity and segregation between Africans and Europeans. Today the unjust allotment of land and the demands of a land reform can mainly be related to the Land Apportionment Act.
