To Build a Fire
This is a short story written by Jack London about a middle-aged logger trying to travel a distance to meet his companions. It is the middle of the winter in the harsh climate of the Yukon Trail which is nothing more than a black hair line in ice. Accompanying him is his dog Pepper. It is 75 degrees below zero.
The town law is that you cannot go to the Yukon Trail if it is colder than -50 degree weather. The world of the Yukon is cold and cruel. He decides to disobey the law and walk through the Yukon anyway to meet his friends at the gold rush. Stumbling into a crack full of ice water, he falls and freezes his legs. He is forced to stop and build a fire to thaw out his legs. Soon after the fire was built a big clump of snow fell on the fire and put it out...
