Is Heart of Darkness a Racist Book

In 1902 Joseph Conrad wrote a book entitled "Heart of Darkness." However there are many persons who consider and would label the book as being racist. One such claim comes from a reading called "An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's Heart of Darkness." In this the author Chinua Achebe believes that Joseph Conrad's "Heart of Darkness" is racist based on Conrad's descriptions of Africa and its people. It is also my opinion that his claims are in fact correct.
In "Heart of Darkness," the narrator is Charlie Marlow who engages in a journey which not only explores the heart of Africa but also aspects of his life. Marlow is a mysterious figure, a former sailor, who tells the story about the event that happened to him few years before, when he was piloting a steamboat up some river in Africa. He was trying to find an agent of a Belgian company making lucrative ivory trade. In the Dark Continent he encounters representatives of every colonial stripe. The book also sheds light unto imperialism and colonialism, relations between races, an attempt to reveal the sense of life by exploring hidden mysteries of the world...
