January 23, 2004 turned out to be an unexpected and enlightening experience as I
received the opportunity to speak with and admire the works of Carrie Mae Weems,
Dawoud Bey and Lonnie Graham. "Embracing Eatonville" in my opinion was a great
display of a diverse group of individuals coming together sharing common goals,
talents and aspirations through artistic expression. The evening started predominately
with the attendants of the art festival observing various pieces of artwork from Dawoud
Bey's "Love with town"; Lonnie Graham's "Eatonville Vendor", "Thompson Avenue" &
"Best Friends"; Carrie Weems's "Birthing & Babies" and finally Deborah Willis's
Stylists Working", Stylists standing next to his car" and "Eatonville High School Field". This was truly an unprecedented event for me. I never have felt this close to "true art". As I made my way through the art gallery I got a good feel for what each individual artist's motivation was when they constructed the pieces of art displayed. Its one thing to see painting or constructed piece of art in book or magazine but to actually see it first hand is actually understand its beauty and meaning. My favorite piece would probably be Dawoud Bey's "Embracing Eatonville section of works. It showed a very diverse group of young people who were able to describe something about themselves through short
narratives. It was very intriguing to me to feel as If I knew or at least could relate with someone I did not know, simply by reading a short description of how that person saw themselves at a particular moment in their lives...
