Should boxing be banned in Britain? This question has been asked many times usually following the tragic deaths of professional boxers. Johnny Owen, Steve Watt, Bradley Stone and Jim Murray are a few of the recent cases of young boxers who in their mid 20's, have died as a result of this sport. Many more boxers have been very seriously injured like Rod Douglas, Michael Watson and Gerald McClerran who have all suffered the life time effects of brain damage.
Boxing has been in Britain since the early 18th Century but is the oldest sport in the world. It is known as the "noble art of self defence" and puts mans natural instinct to fight to the test. Supporters of boxing say that the Bouts are held in a controlled environment with rules in place and a time limit set in 12 rounds. The fights are also supervised by ringside doctors and trained referees who have the power to stop the fight if they think that a boxer is in no condition to carry on.
However opponents believe that the sport is not safe enough and that more safety regulations should be put in place. There is no doubt that Boxing causes injury...
