There is much controversy of women in today's society. This is also evident in Homer's epic, The Iliad. There are three mortal women in The Iliad that are focused upon during this epic. These main women are Briseis, Helen, and Hector's mother-Hecuba. This epic really has no main mortal characters that are women but yet this whole epic battle is based on a women named Helen. These men are spending all their time fighting over one woman.
When examining the life of Briseis, there are many things we can learn about the life of women in the day of Homer. Briseis was the captive of Achilles and Achilles' main possession after the war. When Agamemnon got arrogant and started taking people's women, we see that Briseis went without question. This poses a question on how powerless women really are...
