Women in the United States have two major movements in history. The first one began in mid-19th century and ends in 1920s. The second one began in 1960s and doesn't end until now.
As struggles to gain equal rights with men, these two movements have some similarities. First, the basic objects of the movements are to struggle for the equality between the sexes, though the emphasis differs a little from each other.
Second, the origins of the movements both have some relationship with the blacks' civil rights movements. Since women and blacks were treated unfairly as second-class citizens and deprived of many basic rights throughout the ages. Some women who helped in the abolishment of slavery realized the inequality and launched the first women movement. In 1960s, during the blacks' civil rights movement, American women saw more and more things in common among themselves, and they came to realize the importance as well as the necessity of putting their limited forces together and thus waged the second movement.
