Abstract
Computer use in the educational system has drastically increased since the early 1980's. Computers offer potential for changing teacher practice and offering students a wider variety of alternatives in learning. There are many different types of software that are available for each level of education. The way the software is used in education makes a big difference in effectiveness as well as how teachers are trained in asserting these programs into the classroom teachings.
Introduction
In 1994, the Information Infrastructure Task Force released a study that showed how Americans teach, learn, transmit, and access information remained largely unchanged from a century ago. Textbooks remain the basic unit of instruction while teachers use "chalk and talk" to convey information, and work mainly in isolation from their peers. (Distance Learning Resource Network (DLRN), 1996) In the past two decades, America has progressed through the Information age and into the Age of Communication. Skills that are needed to compete in the world marketplace have become more complex. The skills students will need to be successful in tomorrow's workplace is the ability to collaborate, problem solve, and communicate effectively.
