Management Diversity and Disability


This paper will review, assess and evaluate the Bank of America Diversity Program and propose possible applications. We have reviewed multiple documents that highlight the Bank’s Diversity Program and explain the concept of diversity within the organization. Ken Lewis, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Bank America becomes passionate when talking about diversity and its impact in the areas of meritocracy, leadership, inclusiveness.
     The scope of diversity expands far beyond race, gender, and sexual orientation. Our research has shown the scope of diversity to include race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, childbirth or related medical condition), gender, sexual orientation, national origin, age, ancestry, disability status or veteran status, medical condition, and marital status (Bank of America Associate Handbook, and Diversity. ... Department of the Interior Workforce Diversity). Upon review of this data, we have limited the focus of our analysis to disability status.
     We chose “disability status” based on the focus many companies have placed on this issue and to better understand the complex legal and human resource issues associated with this topic. There are currently many studies that speak to population comparisons based on race and origin by total population broken down by specific cities and companies (Diversity Resource Center) however, in our research we did not see this information readily available for disabilities. ... Census survey defines "a person with a severe disability as one who is unable to perform one or more activities of daily living; or, has one or more specific impairments; or, is a long-term user of assistive devices such as wheelchairs, crutches, and walkers. ...
     Within Bank of America, there is considerable energy around the development of diversity programs to enhance the associate experience and to recruit associates regardless of physical handicaps or special needs. ... Given the above facts, it is ethically and morally correct, and good business sense for Bank of America’s diversity programs to pay special attention to employees with disabilities.
