Thanatography Project
My first experience with death came when I was 7, my great
grandmother died in her sleep. She wasn't sick and had lived a long life so I
wasn't sad after it sunk in that I'd never see her again. My initial reaction
was a lot different though, I felt like I had to cry because it's what you do
when somebody dies. At the funeral I remember being a little surprised by
the amount of people that were there and it made me happy that so many
would remember my great grandmother. I didn't know my great
grandmother that well and the fact that she didn't die a tragic death all made
the experience easy to take. This was the first time that I realized that death
does not have to be a completely sad experience and when somebody has
lived a long life it's more appropriate to celebrate their life then to mourn
their death. We all die, living a long life and dying is not a tragedy so I find
it hard to be upset for a prolonged period of time.
My second experience with death came in grade eight for me. I was
in detention, which didn't happen a lot and so was a kid named Scott. Scott
wasn't even a small friend or a friend of a friend, he knew my name and I
knew his and that's about it...
