Berry's view of Rap music's ties to Africa is weak. Not only is it supported as being weak through two reasons by the nine features of a Diaspora Community, but also her combining Hip Hop and Rap as one in the same kind of music. I feel personally if you don't have an understanding of all levels of the community and a clear understanding of what music is your opinion is not strong and reflects negative on you. I Think she is wrong and through out this paper I will use the book The Haunting of Hip Hop, Oxford University Press, Wikipedia Encyclopedia, my own personal understanding of the topic.
The first issue I will discuss is the difference between Hip-Hop and Rap. Hip Hop according to Oxford University Press states, " a style of popular music of United States black and Hispanic origin, featuring rap with an electronic backing." Whereas Rap is "a type of United States black origin, in which words are recited rapidly and rhythmically over an instrumental backing." According to Wikipedia Encyclopedia, historically Rap music comes from the Hip Hop culture. More recently, Rap has been used to describe the aggressive, mass-market produced music of Nas,50 Cent, Jay-Z, The Notorious B.I...
